Dyed Silk Carrier Rods
Silk carrier rods are a by-product of the silk making industry. They are formed when the cocoons are unwound over rods on its way to form silk thread on a reel. As the silk builds up it must be periodically removed. It is then slit with a knife and detached from the machine. Each carrier rod is approximately 6 inches long and stiff with the natural sericin from the silk caterpillar.
These rods can be used for a wide variety of projects such as felting, hand and machine embellishments, for hats or purses, jewelry making and much more. There are a wide variety of ways to use these interesting little items. To name a few; they may be sprayed with water and pressed flat; or sewn down the center and washed gently to remove the sericin. This will produce a soft fluffy silk strip that is very nice to use for flowers. The possibilities are endless.
6 rods per $5.50 package
Dyed Silk Hankies
After the cocoons have been partially degummed the hankies are formed over a frame into 10” squares. These hankies can be handspun into yarn, used as layers in art quilts, or add to any embellishments you may care to use. The napkins may be stretched out quite thin or piled into clumps for a soft splash of color. Each hankie can be peeled into several layers and used one layer at a time.
1 hankie per $5.50 package
Due to being hand dyed, color may vary.
